On an unrelated note -- I've received several emails from past participants of our Valentine Swap, so I wanted to be sure to let you know that I'm taking a hiatus from the swap this year. It was a hard decision for me, but I simply have too much going on over the next four weeks. Planning on resuming the swap next year, and perhaps I can sneak in a fun summer swap...

Can you believe that the new year is here? 2011 seemed to go by at warp speed. Though, I have no complaints about last year, I'm ready to bring in the new! Have you seen Dellie's beautifully designed free printable January calendar? I love the modern aesthetic, I need to track down some 11x17 paper today, so that I can print my own copy.

Flora is a shop that I always recommend to friends and fellow bloggers when visiting Portland. They offer a large selection of local designer's goods (4 of the lines featured above are made in Oregon) and their jewelry selection is unrivaled. I was utterly ecstatic to hear that Tori Higa was releasing a new edition of her book, Today's Top Stationery Artists this spring. Both books include biography's and images from a lovely array of 52 stationers, but the new book also includes 16 in-depth interviews of some of the featured lines-- what a treat!

Tori does an excellent job of selecting contributors and I was particularly pleased to see some C&C designers profiled again, including: 8mm Ideas, Ghost Academy, SusyJack* and Two Trick Pony.

Tori has been kind enough to offer one C&C reader a copy of Today's Top Stationery Artists 2, she really is a gem!

a tasty new collection from sycamore street press

I was overjoyed to see Sycamore Street Press' new French pastry collection today - including a gorgeous 2012 calendar. One of my favorite destinations in Portland is St. Honoré Bakery with the most drool-worthy case of pastries in the Pacific NW. However, I think the paper variety would be a bit friendlier to the waistline. Such a lovely and original collection, kudos!

I couldn't possibly be any more pleased with my new custom stationery from Dear Hancock. Gwendolyn and Earnest, the talent behind Dear Hancock, are two of the nicest people I've ever met in the industry and they were kind enough to find time in their busy schedules to paint my desk. They added some C&C cards to "my desk" too which has to be the most perfect touch ever.

If you're having a case of envy, don't fret -- DH offers an entire desk collection to suit many tastes and hobbies. They also offer (impeccable) custom design if you'd like your own desk immortalized in stationery infamy. I highly recommend it!

OneCanoeTwo was a happy discovery at the National Stationery Show this year. I've been following along with their developments ever since and always like what I see. I am equally obsessed with the "things that are long" and "things that are round" prints. So clever and visually pleasing.

They also offer other great limited edition state prints, but I had to throw in Georgia as an ode to my girl, Amy.

pacific nw pride: the regional assembly of text

I've had a bit of a love affair with The Regional Assembly of Text the last few years. It's one of those lines that I can't help but pick up a few of their cards when I spot them at Urbanic or Greenwich Letterpress. They also have a legendary store front in Vancouver, BC that is outfitted with vintage office furniture and of course, their own sweet paper goods. I think it may be time for a road trip up North!

I am a major fan of Chewing the Cud's line. Can you even believe how adorable their canvas buckets are? If I were to receive a gift packaged in this I would probably spontaneously combust from joy. I'm dreadfully late to try to call this a Father's Day post, but I just had to give a little shout out to my pop and have had this awesome image from Sycamore Street Press on my desktop for weeks.

This is my fifth year working in the stationery industry and it wasn't until recently that I connected how much my dad shaped my passion and interest in cool cards. He was really my first pen pal. From a young age, he was frequently gone for work and eventually when my parents separated, he made it a point to write me letters on unique cards. I even have a letterpress card he sent me from the late 80's - by Saturn Press, if you're curious.

My dad has also been a major champion of my business, when I travel to Los Angeles to call on shops he often acts as my chauffeur. Many of the buyers I work with know my dad and will make a point to ask about him or say hello. He'll call to tell me about new shops that sell cards, how sweet is that?

I'm eternally grateful to all my friends and family that have been a major support in my business endeavors, but wanted to take a moment to highlight my own dad, for whom will never be too manly for letterpress!

I have the distinct pleasure of getting to see buyer's reactions to Blue Barnhouse's line of cards on a regular basis. It's pretty entertaining to watch the array of responses, more often than not, the type of laugh that escapes before the person even realizes that they are cackling aloud. That was most definitely me in many of these booths this year, particularly in Old Tom Foolery's booth. Hot damn, do they ever know the perfect combination of wicked wit.

I was delighted to discover that Julie of Up Up Creative will be at exhibiting at the Stationery Show for the first this year in booth no. 2067 -- I've had the pleasure of following Julie on twitter and purchasing some of her clever printables over the years. Up Up Creative sent me a peek of these three lovely typographical beauties. All prints are 13 x 19, printed on heavy 100% cotton rag in Julie's studio in Rochester, NY.

I'm quite excited to acquaint you with Double Bravo Designs. The " I Do" and "When You Were Born" collections are, as designer Barbara aptly puts it, "Both a time capsule and a future family heirloom." The series currently features the following cities: New York, London, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Portland. From what I know of the well-traveled Barbara, it's only a matter of time before future destinations are added.

One more important note, a portion of the proceeds from all of the London cards will be donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital a pediatric facility in London, in honor and memory of Barbara's brother Francisco.

An exciting first glimpse from Yellow Owl Workshop! I am totally wild about this new patterned thank you note set, the box includes 8 cards - two of each design. Yellow Owl Workshop is represented by Aesthetic Movement (booth no. 3550), which is where you'll find the latest and greatest from them at NSS.

They are also offering a printmaking workshop and book signing at the West Elm on Broadway and 62nd on Saturday, May 14th. If you can't make the event, be sure to check out Christine's book: "Print Workshop: Hand-Printing Techniques + Truly Original Projects".

I had the pleasure of meeting Gwendolyn of Dear Hancock at the first of the year and have essentially been a bonafide fan of the line ever since. Gwendolyn and Earnest (the other half of their lovely line) have been kind enough to share a peek of a brand new 11x14 print debuting at the Stationery Show next week. I love this sweet and simple sentiment. Perfect for a country or city mouse, if you will. I'm in Los Angeles this week visiting my dad and was delighted to discover this lovely and unique wedding invitation on his desk, from his friends Matt and Megan. The handkerchief is such a fun idea and I love that it reads "Please retain this hanky to dry your tears of joy" at the bottom. I was also struck that their return address stamp was made by a personal favorite, NoteTrunk.

UPDATE: Megan kindly sent me credits to all the amazing folks involved. Lexy of Scissorhands designed the invitation suite. Spoonflower printed the design on fabric and the hankies were finished by Danice, the "Sewing Lady". The vintage postage was purchased through Stamp Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA - an ever appreciated detail.

Wildhorse Press will be joining the Ladies of Letterpress within their much expanded four-booth presence this year. I absolutely couldn't resist sharing this sweet soiree by One Charming Party. I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Sara and Brittany work their magic during Nicole Hill Gerulat's photo workshop at Alt Summit. These ladies are all amazing at their jobs, consider me a groupie!

Being a bonafide dog enthusiast, the only objection I have to this party is that I wasn't invited. One Charming Party has generously included links to their adorable invitations, doggie bags and cupcake toppers.

How To Build Community is currently available as a poster in the Blue Barnhouse shop and will soon be available as a card. While we're on the topic, I'd like to send some well wishes to BBH as they prepare to make the arduous journey of moving their letterpress studio from Asheville to Wilmington, NC in June. Moving a printing studio is hard work, y'all they need all the good ju-ju they can get!

TOTA Press has put together two "thousand cranes" special edition card designs. All proceeds benefit the American Red Cross to support disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific. To quote Tota Press: "Senbazuru - or one thousand cranes - is a tradition of folding 1,000 origami cranes to grant a wish, such as wishing for a speedy and solid recovery." I can't think of a better sentiment...

I also encourage you to take part in the For Japan with Love disaster relief effort organized by Utterly Engaged and Ever Ours - tomorrow will be a day of silence in the blog community in an effort to respect and acknowledge the current devastation in Japan. You can also get involved by donating to Shelter Box. Every penny makes a difference.

The "Nerds are Beautiful" bookmark and bookplate set first caught my eye and suddenly I realized her shop was filled with goodies that I covet. I particularly have my sights set on the trompe l'oeil polka bot bow tie tee. Wouldn't it look smashing with some bright tights and a vintage blazer?

I am so taken by these photographs by Thomas Allen. He constructs dioramas from pulp novels and photographs them in the most pleasing ways. I've always had a sweet spot for pulp fiction and find myself buying old books with enticing covers, simply because they artwork is irresistible.

I highly recommend watching the video short he created, entitled Paper Cuts, it features an amazing array of his work.

One of the many things that I learned at Alt Summit is when you combine me with Capree, Amy, Kelly and a photo booth, the funniest most awesome magic happens. I can only imagine if we'd had some of these rad paper props from Little Retreats. Part of me wants to buy some of these just to, well... you know have on hand for impromptu photo shoots. I never miss an opportunity to hop in a photo booth with or without lovely friends.

I can't begin to tell you what an amazing, inspiring and all out awesome event Alt Summit was for me. If it's any indication, I've already started the countdown for 2012. It's that epic, friends...

Tina Roth Eisenberg's closing keynote address was truly the icing on the cake. These are her personal rules for blogging, the italicized notes are my own.

1. Always credit sources.
A simple via (blogger's name) link is always appreciated.

2. Respect the reader.
Keep your template clean and your advertising relevant.

3. Keep it light.
Swiss Miss' "Made me Smile" category is the second most trafficked on her blog.

4. Blog with the right intentions.
Personally, I am looking to promote indie designers and connect with a like-minded community.

5. Images. Images. Images.
Keep your posts more visual than journalistic.

6. Find your place and own it.
Original content is key. Comment and interact with bloggers that have similar interests.

7. There is such a thing as blogging too much.
Don't saturate your readers, you don't want them feeling guilty if they can't keep up with your posts.

8. Be personal and approachable.
Self-explanatory: No one wants to interact with an aloof automaton.

9. Know what not to blog about.
Politics, religion, well... you get the drift.

10. Think beyond the blog.
Expanding your branding into new related businesses is a completely viable option.

As a card rep, one of the constant laments I hear is, "There aren't enough cards that work for guys." Enter Man Cards. This line is the ultimate match for a fine gent that is perusing for the perfect card. That's real duct tape and dymo labeling, my friends. Today marks the official one week countdown to Alt Design Summit in Salt Lake City!

Some of you may be asking, "What is this Alt Summit event?" Well, let me tell you, actually I'll let Alt tell you, here's a blurb from their site:

9SpotMonk has a new and awesome product that they just added to their collection: color in clocks with working clock mechanisms! How cute and clever are these? A great way to introduce telling time to kids and a fun decor addition for anyone, young or old!

I've been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to announce our second annual Valentine Card Swap. The 2010 V-Day Swap was such a hit, that I've been looking forward to this for months - not to mention, I'm still riding the high of having my mailbox stuffed full of Christmas cards and other holiday goodness. I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to say au revoir to lovely and creative correspondence - keep the cards coming, is my motto!

+ If you'd like to participate, please leave a comment and email carina(at)crowandcanary(dot)com, by Tuesday, January 25th at midnight PST:

Please include the following information -
- name
- mailing address
- email address
- blog/website (not required)
- willing to swap with international partners?

+ You'll be notified of your swap partners on Monday, February 1st via email - depending on the turnout, you may have as many as four partners.

+ Cards should be mailed no later than Monday, February 7th.

+ I would love to see a focus on sending handmade paper goods, but don't want to exclude any non-crafty types. I'll simply say, I'm in the business of supporting and spreading the word about amazing indie designers. So, if you have the choice between a Hallmark card or a card from your local letterpress printer I humbly encourage you to choose the latter! If you need help finding great shops near you, that sell cards from talented independent designers - please feel free to email me. There's always Etsy too!

+ The idea of the swap is to connect with people, so please be sure to write a little 'hello', favorite quote/recipe, or whatever else strikes your fancy. The intention is not to send blank cards for later use, but for recipients to enjoy now.

call for entries: 23rd annual louie awards

I'm brimming with excitement over the upcoming LOUIE awards! I've been selected to be a judge this year, amongst some highly esteemed people in the industry including Kate's Paperie, Oh So Beautiful Paper and a host of other greats.

If the National Stationery Show is like Fashion Week for paperistas, than the LOUIE Awards can easily be compared to the Oscars of cards. Judging will take place during NYIGF and winners are announced during the Stationery Show on May 16th.

Paper + Cup has had a busy year! Not only did they release their new book, Paper + Craft, but this innovative calendar is hot off the press too. The concept is super fun; instead of a calendar with images included, you have the freedom to add your own personal photos or monthly inspiration. The other awesome component, you can customize the cover with an image and/or name. Excellent gift idea!

Before starting my own business, I worked as an optician for several years. That being said, I still have an attachment to art depicting vintage eyewear and that's how I got hooked on Ali Douglass' work. I love her focus on objects and distinctive illustrative style. I can't think of a single design enthusiast that wouldn't want to sport the "modern chairs" print on their walls.

As a self proclaimed calendar addict, I love the idea of a well designed perpetual calendar. This is the first year that I've seen any that truly float my boat. I have three, okay fine four, 2011 calendars, but am thinking that I may invest in a nice perpetual calendar for 2012. Getting excited for the new year ahead!

Greetings from gorgeous Mexico! I hadn't planned to post on vacation, but thought this find was simply irresistible. While catching up on Vanity Fair, poolside of course - I was completely captured by their brief feature on this USB typewriter modified for an iPad or any other device that uses a keyboard. Mucho gusto!

I am thankful for countless things. Here are just a few:

- a healthy body
- learning new things and taking leaps
- my mister and his perfectly off beat sense of humor
- my small town girl and best friend of 27 years
- the kindness of strangers and loved ones

At this very moment. I am particularly thankful to be en route to Mexico with my mister. We're taking a week long vacation that will consist of swimming, sunning, reading, eating, relaxing, and exploring. See you back here in December, dear ones...

gratitude campaign {thanksgiving edition}

I'll just come out and say it, I've really fallen behind on my monthly 'Gratitude Campaign' posts. I've been feeling guilty and decided that the impending Thanksgiving in the US would be the perfect opportunity to make up for my negligence.

My first offering is a simple thanks for reading this little blog. Being self-employed and often working from home, I really take comfort and delight in the connections I make via blogging and tweeting. I have a healthy group of people that I count as friends made through these avenues. So... thank you for taking the time to read and connect with me on some level, it really means more than I can express.
